The Department of Mathematics Joins IMA

On October 25, 2011, The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (hereinafter referred to as “IMA”) and the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University, held the signing ceremony.

 
Fadil Santosa, Director of IMA, made a general introduction to IMA and extended warm welcome to the participation of Zhejiang University. He expressed that IMA will provide Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University with certain financial aids each year for members in America to participate in various academic activities organized by IMA. At the same time, IMA will offer opportunities of various exchanges and cooperation, such as annual plan, summer school, all kinds of international conferences, etc. and the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University is welcomed to directly participate in various cooperative research projects of front subjects.

 
Director Bao Gang extended heartfelt thanks for the sincere invitation of IMA and introduced the long history of the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University and renowned alumni. He mentioned that the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University was striving to be ranked among the first class subjects in the world; after joining IMA, it would enhance intercontinental academic exchanges and cooperation in mathematics and its applied subjects and contribute to the rapid development of mathematics and applied mathematics.

 
Funded by National Science Foundation of U.S. in 1982, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (hereinafter referred to as “IMA”) is a pure academic group in mathematics and applied researches. The main work of IMA is to solve math problems in other subjects and industries by linking the most excellent and the most important science and technology, thus to truly promote and enhance interdisciplinary researches and expand the influence of Mathematics. At present, the 39 member universities of IMA include Georgia Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Iowa State University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Rice University, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University, the University of Chicago, the University of Delaware, the University of Houston, the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, the University of Maryland, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Tennessee, the University of Wisconsin, etc..Besides, the members of IMA also include large enterprises, such as Boeing, Corning, Exxon Mobil Corporation, Ford, General Motor, Honeywell, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, Schlumberger, Siemens, etc.

 
Among the university members of IMA, apart from universities in North America, only KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) belongs to a member unit. Zhejiang University is the first university in China to be invited as the member unit of IMA.
