State Specialized Laboratory

    Industrial Psychology

The State Specialized Laboratory of Industrial Psychology (SSLIP) was founded in 1989 upon the approval of the National Planning Commission and the Ministry of Education. It was the very first national laboratory that was established to conduct psychological research in China. At present, there are more than 20 full-time researchers working in the laboratory, including 10 professors and 8 associate professors. Professor Shen Mowei is now the director of the laboratory. Since it was founded, SSLIP has obtained remarkable achievement in the study of psychological processes concerning human-machine interactions to improve people's work quality and efficiency. The laboratory has proposed and successfully conducted a series of featured researches that are considered to have met international standard. Specifically, over the late 20 years SSLIP has been entrusted by authorities, such as Department of Aviation and Aerospace Industrial, Aviation Industrial of China, COSTIND, and Air Force, to conduct aviation engineering psychology related research. SSLIP's researches have provided valuable ergonomic evidence and human-machine-match parameters for optimizing the design of cockpit illumination and human-plane interfaces. Currently the laboratory has developed to a structure of 7 sub-laboratories with 13 million Yuan fixed assets. They are listed as the following:

n         The Laboratory of Intelligent Human-machine Interaction and Virtual Reality System

This sub-laboratory is now equipped with a SGI 3D figure workstation, a helmet-mounted virtual system, a SONY VPH-G70QW 3 tube projector, and a stereoscopic glass virtual system, together with the 3D molding and real-time simulation softwares (e.g. MultiGen, Vega). It mainly focuses on design and evaluation of human-machine dialog systems and intelligent multi-model user interfaces, new virtual reality system interface, and fundamental and applied researches of artificial intelligence and social robots.

n         The Laboratory of Aviation Engineering Psychology

This sub-laboratory is equipped with an aviation simulation cockpit, a 1980B brightness meter, a precise multi-functional acoustimetera PR-1530AR weak light testing instrument, and a dot spectrum brightness meter. The research focuses in this laboratory include ergonomic studies of the design of integrated display for electronic information and the control system within an aircraft cockpit, overall design of the cockpit of fighter planes and armed helicopters, vision-audition-integrated warning systems, and prevention of glare in cockpits.

n         The Laboratory of Measurement and Modeling of Human Body Parameters

This sub-laboratory is equipped with a NDI 3020 3D movement measuring system, a dynamic remote-control electromyography, a measuring system of working activity, a dynamic simulation system of workload, and a Jack 3D software for human body molding. Research concerned in this laboratory is the measurement of critical parameters of human body relevant to engineering designs, such as parameters for function, strength, viewing field, and limbs movement range. Data pools and dynamic simulation moulds are accordingly being set up.

n         The Laboratory of Interface Design and Evaluation of Intelligent Products

This sub-laboratory is equipped with an Eye-Gaze Eye movement monitoring system, and an evaluating system for multi-model intelligent product interfaces. Its present work includes examination of the usability of intelligent products (hardware & software), optimization of intelligent product interfaces, and development of new types of interfaces.

n         The Laboratory of Brain Function and Cognition

This sub-laboratory is equipped with a NeuroScan 128-channel electroencephalograph, an EyeLink Eye tracking system, a Vsage System, Phantom Premium, and 3D visual and auditory systems. Its research covers the cognitive processes and mechanisms of 3D vision, 3D audition, figure recognition, color perception, tactile pattern recognition, cognitive strategies, knowledge representation, visual working memory, object representation of dynamic targets, and emotion regulation.

n         The Laboratory of Group Behavior Observation

This sub-laboratory is equipped with a omni-directional, networking 5X5 channel video and audio system for behavior monitoring and real-time data collecting, together with a Sony-Svw-790Wsp digital camera, and a PINNACL nonlinear editor system. This laboratory mainly focuses on the investigation of group dynamics, emotion and behaviors during group decision-making, and children's purposive behavior during social interactions.

n         The Networking Laboratory of Human Resource Study

This sub-laboratory is equipped with a LAN-based, multiple-terminal system for real-time data collecting and evaluating, and a series of psychological assessment softwares for evaluating leadership behaviors, personnel competence, occupational aptitudes, management personality traits and cognitive styles. Its work emphasizes on networking personnel evaluation and certification, and development of intelligent training systems.
