Abstract:

 Tailoring materials in atomic scale is definitely the ever-lasting dream for all materials scientists. While there are various approaches towards such ultimate control over materials, we are interested in single atomic layers or single atomic wires fabricated on solid surfaces through self-organization process.

In particular, we have investigated metallic atomic wires and layers on silicon substrates where the prototypical physics of low-dimensional electrons can be studied. For metallic atomic wire systems, which are the thinnest conducting wires on earth, we have discovered a series of metal-insulator transitions into charge density wave ground states. I will also discuss how we can control further the physical properties of atomic wires by introducing impurity atoms. The challenges and opportunities in the electron physics of such extreme materials systems will be presented.

● Techniques; Electron spectroscopy using soft X-ray/UV synchrotron radiation and scanning

tunneling microcopy/spectroscopy

● Subjects; Semiconductor surfaces, interfaces, and nanostructures ; in particular,

electronic properties of novel atomic- or nano-scale structures on semiconductor surfaces

● Achievements;

(1) Discovering a series of Peierls-type metal-insulator transitions of atomic wires formed on silicon surfaces (PRL 1999, 2003, 2005) to establish the field of physics of self assembled atomic wires

(2) Establishing the doping technique on metallic atomic wires formed on silicon surfaces (PRL 2008, PRB 2010)

(3) Unveiling the initial oxidation and nitridation mechanism of silicon surfaces (PRL 2000, 2003)

(4) Establishing the surface electronic structures of cubic SiC(001) surfaces (PRB 1997, PRL 2000)

(5) Discovering interfacial Dirac electron systems in the metal/semiconductor interface (PRL 2010)

(6) Establishing the existence of band structures, the radial band structure, for liquid metals (PRL 2011)
