Abstract:

Just as the electron-positron pair can be produced from the vacuum in a constant electric field background, an open string pair can also be produced in a similar background but now in a stringy context. We will discuss a scenario for which the open string pair production rate can be greatly enhanced. This rate enhancement can have potential observational consequences which may indicate the existence of extra dimensions and why our world has three spatial dimensions. This talk is pedagogical along with a brief introduction to string theory.
