American Physical SocietyAmerican Association for the Advancement of ScienceFellow(会士)。

Sun Wukong, the Chinese monkey king, is attributed with magical powers that enable him to defeat his enemies. One magical power might be the ability to be in two places at one time. Here I will explore the way Sun Wukong might employ quantum mechanics to achieve this feat. In our physics experiments, we have created a special experiment in which a mechanical device can be prepared in two quantum states at one time, the equivalent of being in two places at the same time. I will describe what the physicist needs to do to make this happen; unfortunately, it appears that Sun Wukong must have powers beyond those given by quantum mechanics to perform his tricks.

Dr. ANDREW N. CLELAND is a professor of physics at the University of California at Santa Barbara, a position he has held since 1997. He is an expert in quantum integrated circuits, nanomechanics and microfluidics. He has published over 100 refereed journal articles and has given over 100 public presentations of his scientific work, both in the U.S. and internationally. He is author of a textbook (Foundations of Nanomechanics, in English and Chinese) and is named as inventor on two patents. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Recent work from his research group was selected as the Breakthrough of the Year by Science magazine (2010), and has been featured in newspapers around the world. He holds a PhD in physics and a BS in engineering, both from the University of California at Berkeley.
